Starting CrossFit as a beginner can be intimidating due to the extensive use of acronyms and jargon. As your coach, we're here to help by demystifying the terminology. Keep reading to understand the most common acronyms used in CrossFit gyms, so you can feel confident during your workouts.

WOD:

This acronym stands for "Workout of the Day." Each day, CrossFit gyms post a new WOD for members to complete. WODs can include a variety of movements and exercises, and can be modified for different fitness levels.

AMRAP:

This stands for "As Many Rounds (or Reps) As Possible." In an AMRAP workout, you have a set amount of time to complete as many rounds or reps of a given exercise or series of exercises as possible.

EMOM:

This stands for "Every Minute on the Minute." In an EMOM workout, you perform a specific exercise or set of exercises at the top of each minute, resting for the remainder of the minute before starting again at the next minute mark.

RX:

This stands for "Prescribed." The RX version of a workout is the standard version, as written, without any modifications.

SCALED:

This refers to a modified version of a workout. Scaled workouts are designed to accommodate different fitness levels and abilities, and are often used by beginners or those with injuries.

PR:

This stands for "Personal Record." It refers to the best performance you've achieved in a given exercise or workout.

CF:

This stands for "CrossFit." It's the name of the fitness program and brand that focuses on functional movements performed at high intensity.

C&J:

This stands for "Clean and Jerk." It's a weightlifting movement where you lift a barbell from the ground to your shoulders, then press it overhead.

DL:

This stands for "Deadlift." It's a weightlifting movement where you lift a barbell from the ground to a standing position.

HSPU:

This stands for "Handstand Push-Up." It's a gymnastics movement where you perform a push-up while in a handstand position against a wall.

KBS:

This stands for "Kettlebell Swing." It's a functional movement where you swing a kettlebell between your legs, then use your hips to propel it forward to shoulder height.

T2B:

This stands for "Toes-to-Bar." It's a gymnastics movement where you hang from a bar and bring your toes up to touch the bar.

These are just a few of the most common acronyms you'll encounter in a CrossFit gym. As a beginner, don't worry if you don't know them all right away. Your coach and fellow members will be happy to explain any terms you don't understand, and as you continue with CrossFit, you'll become more familiar with the terminology. The most important thing is to show up, work hard, and enjoy the journey!
