Exercise, Sleep and Diet.

Exercise can do wonders for the body. Besides the obvious physical aspects of training, exercise helps with mental and emotional well-being. In order to maximize the positive effects exercise has - the body needs to have the building blocks available to help proteins, enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and other elements make those changes happen.

Sports research has identified that training accompanied by good sleep and adequate nutrition is the best way to optimize the benefits we obtain from running a several miles, pushing a few pounds, or any strength, cardio, or endurance programming. While we can easily adjust our workout, it's not always easy to get the perfect nutrition or obtain the rest we need for the best recovery and building after a workout.

Why “Sports Nutrition”?

Athletes have different dietary needs then the average person, because of this they enter what we like to call “augmented” nutrition and exercise wellness. In recent years, there has been an explosion in sports nutrition. The Internet is filled with advertisements raving about everything from supplements to specific diet plans, all the way to infusions of nutrients and minerals. These different methods all have a similar goal - to make essential elements for growth and recovery easily accessible and present for our bodies to utilize when needed.

Optimizing the Delivery of Essential Nutrients.

IV infusions (and IM shots) have made a serious impact on sports recovery. With the IV infusion, our bodies can receive a critical nutrient or mineral directly in a form ready for absorption and use. An example would be B-12. This vitamin is water soluble and is needed for the body to create and use energy in the form of ATP. While most Americans don’t suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, there are subsets of people [such as vegetarians, or people with repetitive nutrient poor diets] that can have low levels of B-12. The addition of IV infusion and IM injections isn’t limited to supplying the body with essential vitamins and minerals. Other substances that aid in specific activities can be delivered to the bloodstream through these methods and can maximize everything from rehydration, to diminishing inflammation, all the way to increasing metabolism.

Top Infusions and Intramuscular Injections.

Infusions all start in a base of normal saline. It’s fluid that is closely matched to our blood and by itself provides the body with instant hydration. The “Gold Standard” of a complete and optimized infusion is called the “Meyer’s Cocktail” named after the physician who first created this combination of vitamins and minerals. It has been used for years for a variety of conditions; to alleviate stress, reduce chronic fatigue and improve immunity. Another common IV therapy is “Recovery” or “Performance” based infusions. In addition to essential vitamins and minerals, these types of infusions contain aminos acids - the building blocks of proteins. “Beauty” based infusions will often contain biotin, an essential vitamin that helps skin, hair, and nails. Lastly, “Wellness” infusions are often labeled as “Immunity” boosting infusions. These contain vitamin C, and zinc - which help our natural defenses fight off colds and stressors.

Always Know Your Risks and Benefits for Supplements

Sports nutrition and supplements are not medications, and don’t go through the same rigorous testing that prescribed drugs do. They also aren’t heavily monitored for “truth in advertising” - meaning that the benefits for supplements aren’t always proven through medical scientific studies and their results might be generalized. As with anything that requires a needle to deliver a substance into the body - IV infusions and IM injections are performed only by licensed and trained individuals who can assure that the procedures are done correctly and safely. These procedures do carry risks such as allergic reaction or local inflammation and trained professionals will be able to recognize and address these if they arise.

To Do or Not to Do

Adding infusions and Intramuscular injections into your training can optimize your sports nutrition, performance, and recovery. When delivered by professionals and matched appropriately to your needs - they can provide great performance benefits. Go ahead and try one! You just might be surprised how great an infusion can make you feel!
