5 Ways To Start Loving Exercise (And Stop Dreading Your Workouts)

We all know those people who seem to naturally love working out. They’re in the gym every morning, smiles on their faces, and they even stick to their training programs during the holidays and while they’re on vacations.

But some of us didn’t inherit that magical exercise gene. Getting to the gym even twice a week feels like a chore. And that “runner’s high” that everyone talks about? We’re still not sure it exists.

Nevertheless, we know that exercise is still a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle. No one needs to remind us of its benefits: mood balance, increased energy, stress relief, immune health, weight loss, etc.

So, if you’d like to make exercise less of a chore and more of a delight, this is for you. Here are five ways to start loving exercise (so that you can stop dreading your workouts and just have fun!).

Still stuck on the treadmill after all these years? If you’re tired of the same old workout, day after day,, it might be time for something new. You don’t have to give up your old routine entirely, but commit to trying a new style of exercise every single week: a yoga class, a trip to the local rock climbing wall, a CrossFit workout. And along the way, you might fall in love with something you never would have expected.

When exercise isn’t your favorite activity (and you’re just slogging through it for the health benefits), it’s easy to slip into a negative mindset. You start to view each workout as an obligation...or worse, a punishment for not eating the right foods or getting enough steps in.

If this sounds familiar, it’s time to reframe your perspective. Start looking at exercise as…

  • a reward (some “me time” at the end of a long day)

  • a privilege (not everyone has a healthy, mobile body!)

  • and a gift to yourself (a chance to care for your mental and physical health)

Ditch the guilt trip, and focus on the positive.

If you dread your current workout routine, try taking a trip down memory lane. Think back to times where you’ve loved moving your body (playing soccer in high school, hiking on camping trips, or taking a swim in the ocean). Then, even if you aren’t able to recreate those activities exactly, look for ways to incorporate elements of those fun, active memories into a new workout routine.

If running through your neighborhood on worn out sneakers isn’t cutting it anymore, you may want to consider an upgrade. Get a new pair of running shoes, that pair of leggings you’ve been eyeing, or a fancy FitBit. If you need to make an even bigger change, consider working out with a personal trainer who can help you find a new workout routine that you’ll love. And remember: investing in your health is always a smart investment.

Working out alone can be kind of a drag sometimes—especially if you’re not loving your workout to begin with. So, if you want to infuse some new energy and passion into your exercise routine, start looking for a community or an accountability partner to join your fitness journey. Connect with someone on our Facebook pages, strike up a conversation after a kickboxing class, or get involved with our CrossFit community—our avid CrossFit members always say it feels like a family. Getting active with friends might be the best way to fall in love with exercise again.

We hope you find the perfect workout routine for your unique personality, schedule, and that your gym session can be the highlight of your day instead of a dreaded task on your neverending to-do list. We’ll see you soon!
